Guava Pastries

This decadent Puertorrican dessert is so easy to make you’ll be asking yourself why you haven’t tried it before. Sweet guava paste inside layers of flaky crust dusted with a copious amount of powdered sugar, oh my! I learned to make these pastries years ago in college thanks to Maria Luisa, aka Mari. She was a beautiful Latina from the Bronx who taught me a thing or two about the city.

ingredients for pastry

Her brother Ramón loved these pastries, and Mari used to make them every time he’ll come to visit. His visits were frequent because Ramón was a loser piece of shit, always taking advantage of his sister. The secret for the pastry is the balance between the guava and the crust. Too much paste, and it will spill out and create a mess. Too little of it, and it will be bland and pointless, just like Ramón.

Mari had this recipe and method down. She could make it with her eyes closed and always come out perfect. Her mother taught her how to do it. The other thing mom passed along was an irrational idea of taking care of her brother. He always came first. I hated him, so I took care of him.

For this recipe, there’s no right or wrong amount of powdered sugar. You can use as much or as little as you like. For this particular case, I’ll dare say the more, the better. The same can’t be said about cocaine. If you mix a spoonful of it with powdered sugar, it can be a sickly delight. Once the eyes roll back, the overdose is in full swing, so you can sit and enjoy a tasty treat while the subject squeals and twists like a hog in the other room.

A cup of coffee or a cup of black tea are great companions to enjoy this delicious treat. I sure hope you give it a try. Let me know how you liked it!
